Why is there a need for an exclusive “women of color” pageant?
First of all, the Sisterhood of Miss Black America (SOMBA) is more that a beauty pageant. In addition to its element of a positive physical appearance, it is an all encompassing enrichment program causing sisters to engage in absolute self-control, self-management, and successful self-development.
Now having entered into its second year of rebirth, the same question continues to be asked, blogged, and addressed. Is it necessary to still have a Miss “Black” America Pageant, when Blacks have over the years made significant strides in all inclusive pageant systems, and elsewhere?
Our immediate response is one of a rhetorical nature. Should the NAACP and other civil rights organizations close its doors because Blacks, on surface, are getting a fair shake these days? Or should Black publications like Ebony and Jet stop the press on their magazines because Blacks now have opportunity to grace the pages, and even covers, of White-owned publications?
Clearly, there is an absolute necessity for the Sisterhood of Miss Black America to continue causing sisters to Sow the Seeds of Positivity and Reap the Flowers of Success..
